Democracy Day is a national public holiday in Nigeria that commemorates the restoration of democratic governance in the country. It is a day set aside to celebrate the return to civilian rule and to honor the struggles and sacrifices made by Nigerians in the pursuit of democracy.

Date of Celebration
Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12. Prior to 2018, it was observed on May 29, which marked the day in 1999 when the military handed over power to a civilian government. However, in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari officially changed the date to June 12 to honor the 1993 presidential election, which is widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history.

Historical Significance
The June 12, 1993, presidential election was won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, but the results were annulled by the military regime led by General Ibrahim Babangida. This led to widespread protests and political unrest. MKO Abiola was later arrested after declaring himself president and died in custody in 1998. The change of Democracy Day to June 12 is seen as a recognition of his contributions and the democratic aspirations of the Nigerian people.

How It Is Celebrated
Democracy Day is marked by various activities across the country, including:

- Presidential addresses to the nation
- Public lectures and symposiums on democracy and governance
- Parades and cultural displays

It is also a time for citizens and leaders alike to reflect on the progress made and the work that remains in strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria.
